Thanksgiving is upon us. As we remember all the things we have to be grateful for this year, it also a time to look forward into the holiday giving season and help those less fortunate. While you are out doing your Black Friday shopping, pick up a new, unwrapped toy to donate to a child who needs a little holiday cheer.
Donations for the Red Andrews Christmas Dinner toy drive will be accepted through mid December at any of the 8 Security Self Storage locations (see http://securityselfstorageok.com/locations.asp for a fill list addresses) or at Baker First Commercial Real Estate 2800 NW 36th Street, Oklahoma City.
If you have any questions, contact any locale resident manager, or Gwen Barrington at the corporate office 405-947-7200.
We wish you and your family a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday!

Storing Lives Rebuilding Hope
Storing Lives, Rebuilding
Hope
Being
a manager of a business can be a daunting task, helmed by several hours at the
office and plenty of hard work. However, Cindy Bunch and her husband Mike, the resident
manager from Security Self Storage’s South Oklahoma City location takes
her business to a whole different level. Security Self Storage’s south side location,
at SW 89th and S. Penn has assisted over 100 victims of the spring
tornadoes that ripped through Oklahoma, leaving countless number of people
homeless and seeking a place for storage while they wait for their homes and
businesses to be rebuilt.
They not only pride themselves on assisting people from the tornado, they do so by making it easier for them to afford it. Administrative fees were waived and discounted rates were offered to the victim. In the time of need, Security Self Storage was there helping people get their lives back on track. Being able to obtain a secure storage unit in Oklahoma City provides Oklahomans with a place to hold those items that are valuable to them, in order to get a fresh start in life.
Cindy hand delivered flyers to the American Red Cross and local churches to spread the word. After the disasters, Cindy coordinated with other storage facilities helping those in need find a safe and secure place to hold their belongings. Beyond the walls of the storage unit are managers that care about their community and the people who live in it.
While the tornadoes forced people to rebuild their lives, Cindy lent an ear to hear their stories and provide emotional support, as any caring Oklahoman would do; and because of Cindy & Mike and the help of Security Self Storage, hard-working Oklahomans are rebuilding their lives in the aftermath of one of the most dangerous natural disasters to hit Oklahoma in over 10 years. The damage caused millions of dollars in damages to local Oklahoma City and Moore homes and businesses. Cindy & Mike’s willingness to go out on their own initiative speaks well of the employees at Security Self Storage and it is one aspect no one should ever take for granted.
Security Self Storage is doing their part in helping rebuild Oklahoma City, and providing a beacon of support for the community. Cindy & Mike epitomize the essence of being store managers, taking care of the neighborhood. To them, the owners of the units have names and stories – they aren’t just numbers. They live and work in the community. They have children, and hopes, and dreams, too. Security Self Storage will continue to be there for Oklahomans now and in the future.

Creative Cramming with Carin
by Carin Weigel, Resident
Manager, Edmond location (1000 N. Santa Fe)
Tips & Tricks to organize and protect your Security Self Storage unit
Space – Select a unit based on what you need to store. Your Security Self Storage Manager can help you determine the size space you need. What will help is if you open the boxes and purge the trash from the treasures before moving them to long-term storage. Removing these items from boxes destined for storage can save a great deal of headaches down the road.
Also, the boxes that items are stored in at home are typically not ideal for storage facilities. Items tend to be placed in random boxes selected for convenience, versus long-term storage. What’s the difference? Boxes that are identical will stack better in storage space, thus creating more room in your storage unit. You may purchase these types of boxes from at all our locations at the office.
Shelving units that can be placed inside the unit are very helpful in keeping boxes organized and creating a structure to go up. You always have height in your storage unit, not just floor space.
Protection – A little preventative maintenance can help protect items. First, categorizing items and cataloguing them while preparing them for storage will help in the event of a burglary, fire, etc. In the event of a burglary, a thief is on a short time table and will probably grab the most convenient items so make it more difficult for them to find true treasures. Store the most valuable items at the rear of the storage unit and number boxes instead of labeling them with their contents’ name. Your master list will detail their contents and that list will remain in your possession.
Another idea, try to store items on pallets so they are not sitting directly on the floor of your unit. In the event of a flood, leak etc. your items will be much better protected than if they come in direct contact with moisture.
Developing a system to organize your Security Self Storage unit has multiple benefits. “Creative cramming” is what it is all about. Being organized is a huge help, especially when you need that one item out of that one box.
Please see your location manager for more tips and helpful hints! If you have an idea or a “creative cramming” tip, please let us know!

New Storage - Making Dreams a Reality
When Rod Baker, owner of Baker First Commercial
Real Estate, has a dream, it will become a reality! Nine years ago, Baker was aware the Walmart
building at Reno and S. Midwest Blvd in Midwest City would soon be vacant. Baker knew expanding into the Midwest City
market would be perfect for Security Self Storage and a dream was born.
The Walmart location sat empty for eight years
as the property went on the market and then off. For eight years the 17 acre lot was an
empty eye sore on the Midwest City map.
Finally in December of 2012, Baker’s client; MWC Self Storage Investors,
LLC was able to close on the property and begin turning the vacant property
into a new storage facility.
Alliance Property Development began
construction in mid-January 2013 when 8.5 acres, which included the Walmart
store itself, were fenced off to become the new MWC location for Security Self
Storage. The entire inside of the
building was demolished, leaving only the exterior walls. Jay Baker, Director of Construction for
Alliance Property Development, said “After demo, a non-load bearing system was
installed to create the separate storage units.” The entrance into the remodeled facility is
now be on S. Midwest Blvd.
The Midwest City location has 17,803 square
feet of climate controlled storage; the largest climate controlled facility in
the OKC metro with 145 units. There will
be 60,000 sf of exterior units. When
converting the Walmart building, openings on the east and west walls create the
driveway access to the exterior storage units.
Cindy Polando, the Market Manager over all eight locations, stated “A
unique feature to this location is a covered drive over the exterior unit
doors. We are one of the few places in
the metro that offers you rain free, snow free access to your units.”
Resident Managers George & Elaine Fast made
the move from the Security Self Storage location near Memorial & N. Santa
Fe to the new Midwest City facility.
They have been managers with Security Self Storage for over nine
years. Elaine says “It’s good to get
back home to the community George and I are from. We are looking forward to serving the Mid-Del
area with great storage prices and super nice units.”
An almost 10 year vision is finally open! What
once was a dream is now a reality. With
the 8th location of Security Self Storage, from Bethany to Midwest
City, and Norman to Edmond, We’ve Got YOUR Storage,
Covered!
Covered!
